Over-exfoliation is the most common self-inflicted skin problem we see, and it is easy to understand why. The early results feel like progress. Skin looks smoother and brighter, so it seems reasonable to do it more often. By the time it goes wrong, most people conclude their skin has become sensitive and start treating the symptoms.
The signs are consistent, and worth learning to recognise:
Front Range Dermatology and Westlake Dermatology both describe the same pattern. The tell is products suddenly feeling uncomfortable when nothing about them changed. What changed is your barrier.
For most people, one to three times a week. More specifically:
Daily exfoliation is essentially never appropriate at home, and it is a leading cause of the barrier damage dermatology practices see. If your cleanser contains an acid, your toner contains an acid and you are also using a scrub, you are exfoliating three times a day without having decided to.
This is the part people find hardest. A damaged barrier needs somewhere in the region of two to six weeks to recover, depending how deep the damage goes — and around 28 to 42 days is a realistic expectation, not days.
Recovery is mostly subtraction. Stop all exfoliants and retinoids. Cleanse gently, moisturise, wear sunscreen, and add nothing new. It feels like doing nothing, which is precisely why people abandon it early and restart the cycle.
There is a reasonable question here: if exfoliation causes this much trouble, why have it done professionally?
Because the frequency is controlled and someone is assessing your skin before deciding what it can take. A treatment like microdermabrasion done every few weeks by someone watching how your skin responds is a very different proposition from a home routine that quietly escalates.
If your skin is currently irritated, tell us before your appointment rather than after. The right treatment for a compromised barrier is a gentle, hydrating one — and sometimes the right answer is to wait a fortnight.
